Christoph Sold has created a Dropbox location for those who wish to assist with the German translation of the PC-BSD Handbook. If you’re interested in assisting, use this link to access the location. Dropbox requires you to create a login account and to be logged in in order to access content.
Let us know if there are other collaborative spaces for other translations of the Handbook.
The 8.2 version of the Handbook has been frozen to leave time for translation work before 8.2 is released. This means that if you make any edits to the Handbook on the wiki, that change will not make it into the 8.2 version of the Handbook. Once 8.2 is released, the 8.2 Handbook will be available for download/viewing in PDF and HTML formats. The wiki will be unfrozen at that point and work will start on updating the wiki content to reflect the upcoming 9.0 release.
If you are interested in assisting with a translation of the Handbook, please read the instructions in this mailing list post.
A PC-BSD user mentioned on IRC that the pcbsd.fr website was out of date–he noticed when he tried to download 8.1 and ended up with 7.1 instead.
It took a bit of time, but we found the current webmaster who has since updated the pcbsd.fr website. If you notice any content that was missed, please leave a comment so it can be fixed. Also, if you have some time and would like to assist with translating or proofing translations, let us know and we’ll put you in touch with the webmaster.
The Pootle website, used to localize the PC-BSD menus, was successfully migrated yesterday. Translators can now access the website here, and for now, the old URL redirects to the new location. The migration provides the following benefits:
- Faster (memcache and lucene)
- Suggested translations from Google translate
- The bug that was mangling translated strings should be fixed
The Become a Translator section of the Handbook has been updated, but could use more details to get new translators started. If you have used the PC-BSD Pootle system, please skim through this section. If you can think of useful information to add to it, create a login account and update this section. New users would find the following information useful:
- any gotchas to be aware of when working with the translations
- any processes used by the translation teams to coordinate the review of new translations
The PC-BSD translation team uses Pootle to manage its translations. Josh has just finished a test upgrade to Pootle and is looking for testers’ feedback before initiating the actual migration:
I have a new version of pootle and translate toolkit up. There were some issues with the migration, some of the strings were mangled in the database, I think this is the bug that has been causing regressions in the pootle engine, but I’m not sure.
The new version should be quite a bit faster, and also it adds support for translation suggestions from google.
This is a test migration, I’ll be doing the real migration this weekend unless people have issues with this that I can’t easily fix between now and this weekend. Please please don’t do large translations on this instance, as it will be resynced from the live site this weekend and all changes will be lost.
I’m also taking suggestions for a new URL, the current one is pretty lame. Maybe translations.pcbsd.org?
The test migration URL is here. Please send any feedback to Josh.
